Welcome to Kanha School of Dance!
Kanha School of Dance focuses on developing students in the "Bharatanrityam" style. This is not to be confused with "Bharatanatyam" even though many similarities can be drawn.
What makes Kanha different?
The distinguishing factor of the Bharatanrityam style is the prominent use of charis, karanas, nritta hastas and rechakas in addition to the adavus that make up Bharatanatyam. Several people draw parallels between Bharatanrityam and Kuchipudi, while some others say they see a bit of Odissi in it too. Reason being, while Bharatanatyam adhers strongly to the book " Abhinaya Darpana", Bharatanrityam finds its origins in the Natya Shastra which has been loosely adapted by most Indian classical dance forms. Naturally traces of many Indian classical dance forms appear in the Bharatanrityam interpretation.
The creator of Bharatanrityam, the renowned Dr.Padma Subramaniam has extensively researched the 108 Margi Karanas described in the Natya Shastra. This style is slowly gaining more widespread acceptance, attention and adulation. Kanha's Creative Director and Instructor Smt. Ashwini Srivatsan had the good fortune of learning the Bharatanrityam tradition from Dr.Padma's Subramaniam's seniormost disciple Late.Smt Sundari Santhanam. At Kanha, Ashwini strives to propogate the Bharatanrityam style which her Guru so strongly believed in, while adding elements of her own creativity and influences.
What does Kanha mean?
Kanha is another name for "Lord Krishna". It means "attractive" and "beautiful". At Kanha we strongly believe that both the dancer and her dance should attract the audience, take them to a beautiful place and elevate them spiritually just as Krishna did in the "Rasaleela" and "Kalinga Nartanam".
